CHERRY BLOSSOM PRINCESS SELECTION CRITERIA
To qualify as an NCSS Cherry Blossom Princess, all candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications in order to be accepted to represent their State, Territory, or Country in the 2008 Cherry Blossom Festival. State Society or Embassy sponsors may impose additional requirements.
PLEASE NOTE: Applications for the 2008 Cherry Blossom Festival are now being accepted and will be considered at the appropriate time.
Residence: The Princess must be a U.S. citizen and either have been born in, be the daughter of a parent born in, or a legal resident of the State, Territory or Country she represents. She should be well informed about the geographic entity she is representing
Age: The Princess must be at least 19 years of age, but no older than 24 years old as of April 12, 2008, the closing day of the 2008 Festival.
Education: The Princess must be at least a high school graduate.
Marital: The Princess must be single and never have been married.
General: The Princess should possess poise, intelligence, maturity, have a good personality and character, and enjoy good physical, mental and emotional stability in order to withstand the rigorous schedule of Festival activities.
Availability: The Princess must be available for all scheduled NCSS Festival events and may be asked to participate in related events during the Festival period. Failure to participate in all NCSS events may disqualify a Princess from any special post-Festival activities.
All Virginia Cherry Blossom Princess Applicants must meet the above NCSS requirements.
The Society of Virginia Princess Selection Committee will accept all applications and then base their decisions on the following:
- The Strength of the Application
- The Written Answer to the Essay Question
- A Personal Interview with the Princess Selection Committee
Candidates, please note: In addition to the time commitment, the Princess also has a financial commitment that each candidate should be aware of. While the actual figures are discretionary, in broad terms the financial requirements are, as follows: The Princess must have an appropriate wardrobe for all of the scheduled events to include a white ball gown. Specific wardrobe requirements will be provided to the candidate selected. It is recommended that all of the Princesses stay at the headquarters hotel in downtown Washington, D.C. where bus transportation to and from the events will be provided and is mandatory. The cost of lodging and any meals not included in the scheduled events are the responsibility of the Princess. A Princess Reception is hosted by the Princess’ family prior to the festival. It is at this time the Princess is crowned the Virginia State Cherry Blossom Princess, usually in the presence of family and friends. All details of this event are left to the discretion and planning of the Princess and her family. As the nominating organization, members of the Virginia State Society are invited to attend as paying guests. Tickets to all festival events are provided for the princess. Family members are not required to attend but are encouraged to do so. Family members pay the regular ticket price for each event. It is a requirement of the Virginia State Society that the Virginia Princess be the daughter of parents who are members of the society. To join, annual dues are $15.00 for a single membership and $25.00 for couple’s membership.

The Cherry Blossom Festival for 2008 is the week of April 6 - 12. It is a requirement of the National Cherry Blossom Festival Committee and the National Conference of State Societies that the state princesses attend all scheduled Cherry Blossom events during festival week. If selected as the Virginia Cherry Blossom Princess, would you be available to participate from April 6 - 12? ________.
By the turn of a wheel, one of the Cherry Blossom Princesses will be selected to represent the United States as the 2008 Cherry Blossom Queen. If you are chosen, you will win a trip to Japan as the U.S. Representative at the Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival. All air, hotel and meal expenses will be covered for this chaperoned 6 to 10 day trip. The Queen and her chaperone will be responsible for the payment of fees and taxes. The dates of this trip are to be announced. In addition, the Cherry Blossom Queen needs to be available to participate in other possible events in Washington, DC as well as the 2009 Cherry Blossom Festival events. Should you win, would you be available to represent the United States at these events both in Washington DC and Japan? ____________
