FALL 2011 NEWSLETTER

Virginia Cherry Blossom Princess
Becomes 1
st Runner Up

The Cherry Blossom events were spectacular this year beginning with the Virginia Princess Crowning Luncheon on March 26 at the Washington Golf & Country Club in Arlington, VA.  Many thanks tothe Kennedy family for all their hard work in planning the Luncheon.  It was an elegant event for an elegant Princess.  And, as luck would have it, at the NCSS Cherry Blossom Ball our Virginia Princess, Jessie Catherine Kennedy, by spin-of-the-wheel, became 1st Runner Up for the 2011 National Cherry Blossom Queen!  What a proud moment for our Society and, of course, her lovely family.

East Meets West

On Tuesday, June 7, many of our “Young Virginians” attended an “East Meets West” Networking Happy Hour at Lounge 201 in Washington, D.C.  The Society of Virginia partnered with the California State Society for this fun event.  Over 50 people were present.  A few have become members (Arleen Joyce, Mason Butler and Dan Dawson) and several others have expressed an interest in our organization.  We hope to have many more of these events this coming year.

Cherry Blossom’s 100TH

This coming year, 2012, is an historical year and many special events will be planned.  The National Cherry Blossom Festival will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of the planting of the first Japanese Cherry Blossom trees given to the United States by Japan.  Our Virginia Cherry Blossom Princess Program needs your support for this historical year.  If you haven’t already done so, please send your annual membership dues in today.  Help us keep our historical Society and Cherry Blossom Princess Program going.  Make your check ($15/single or $25/family) payable to The Society of Virginia and mail to Gail Sullivan, 5010 Devin Green Lane, Fairfax, VA  22030.

Volunteers

Members interested in volunteering for any of the 2012 National Conference of State Societies Cherry Blossom Program events, please email me at gailandlucky@gmail.com (lucky is my dog!) and I will forward your name to those in charge.

The Polo Event

On June 18, 2011, several Society of Virginia members attended the 2011 Capital Hospice Polo Cup at Great Meadows, The Plains, Virginia.  The highlight for Bob Sullivan was a picture with John Walsh of “America’s Most Wanted” TV Show.

Juliana Smith chats with Andrew Hale-Byrne (right) and his friend prior to the match.

All of us, including Pamela Harbourt, enjoyed Champagne, sandwiches, fruit and cheeses at the tailgate event.  Planning ahead, like a good CPA, Pamela brought her homemade Ginger Ice Cream for all to enjoy.  It was a welcome addition to a steamy summer day.

A sincere “thank you” to Andrew Hale-Byrne (2nd row, 3rd from the left) for organizing this special event.   Also, a very special thank you to Piper Larson for her generous champagne contribution.  Piper and her mom (Adeline Sweeney Phillips) were greatly missed!

INDIGO LANDING

Our “Sunday Brunch at Indigo Landing” on Daingerfield Island, Alexandria, VA was wonderful.  The scenery at the Washington Sailing Marina with all the sail boats on the water is breathtaking.  The brunch was delicious and plentiful and the conversation with fellow members, of course, was delightful.
